~ CARTER, GILBERT WILFRED ~
02/28/10

CARTER, Gilbert Wilfred, passed away peacefully at the Southampton Care Centre after a long and valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease on Sunday, February 28, 2010 in his 80th year. Lovingly remembered by his wife Mary (nee Moss) and his children Leonard (Liz), Stephen, Dennis (Patricia) and Mary Beth. Proud grandfather to Geoffrey (Jennifer), Vasanta, Jonathan (Brenda), Amber (Ivan) and Krystal. Great grandfather to Jack and Haley. Gil graduated from Queen’s University in 1952 first in his class and received the Chemical Engineering Medal for Excellence. Gil attended the four years at Queen’s through scholarships and bursaries earned for his academic achievement. Gil worked as a top executive for Imperial Oil during 25 years. His career with Imperial Oil began in Sarnia after graduation in 1952 and then transitioned to Toronto head office with much travel to Western Canada. Gil’s roles at Imperial Oil involved looking into potash production in Saskatchewan, traveling to Japan in 1964 for three months to investigate techniques in polyvinyl-chloride production and assisting in the development of the Redwater fertilizer plants northeast of Edmonton. In the mid seventies at Imperial Oil, Gil headed up the department, New Energy Resources involved with the production of synthetic crude at the Cold Lake Oil Sands as well as exploring the development of other energy alternatives such as coal, uranium, sun, wind and nuclear. In addition, Gil was Imperial Oil’s representative on the ownership consortium working closely with Syncrude Canada in Fort McMurray. In 1977, Gil and Mary chose a lifestyle change and semi-retired to Southampton. Over the years, Gil experienced much personal satisfaction in developing the two subdivisions of Sandpiper Court and Miramichi Shores overlooking Lake Huron in Saugeen Shores. Over and above his evident pride, love and commitment to his family, Gil was known for: his friendly smile; lively conversation; competitive nature; passion for fishing; contribution and service to the Southampton Tennis Club; tireless energy for completing “projects”; and, admirable habit of picking up litter to keep the community beautiful. Cremation. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Gil Carter will be held at the Eagleson Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2010, with a social gathering to follow in the Family Room at Eagleson Funeral Home. Private Internment of Ashes at a later date. Expressions of remembrance to the Southampton United Church, the Southampton Care Centre, the Parkinson’s Society of Canada or Southampton Tennis Club.

I would like to Send Condolences
