Obituary

Dennis Albert Stier, of Southampton, passed away peacefully at Owen Sound Hospital on July 4, 2025, at the age of 78, after a brief illness, with his family by his side.

Born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Dennis was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (née Steiger) Stier. He was predeceased by his brother, Jimmy Stier, and his wife of 35 years, Suzanne Simmie-Stier.

Dennis was a graduate of Saugeen District High School and earned his engineering degree from the University of Waterloo. As a young man, he worked in Canada’s North and contributed to the Delhi Engineering Research Group, before returning to work alongside his father on the family’s tobacco farm on the B-Line of Arran Township.

Dennis went on to have a long and fulfilling career as an engineer at Bruce Power, where he took great pride in mentoring the many young professionals he worked with.

Dennis enjoyed cross-country skiing, curling, sailing, hiking, kayaking, and relaxing at the family cottage on the Bruce Peninsula. In later years, he developed a passion for travel and exploring the world. He gave generously of his time to organizations he cared about, including the Marine Heritage Society, Sauble Ski Club, Sydenham Bruce Trail Club, Isthmus Bay Cottagers’ Association, and Southampton Curling Club, among others.

Dennis is lovingly remembered by his sons, Toby Stier (Angela) and Ben Stier. He is survived by his sister, Dianne (Barry) Lawrie; niece Brita (Jon) Sherren and nephew Eric (Marina) Lawrie; his uncle George (Irene) Stier, aunt Helen (late Jim) Bacskai, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his second wife, Sandra Howe, her family, and all those who knew and loved him.

Friends will be received at the Port Elgin United Church, 840 Bruce St., Port Elgin, on Saturday July 12, 2025 from 12 noon until 1 p.m. A Memorial Service for Dennis will begin at 1 p.m. at the church. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Brightshores Health System Foundation (Owen Sound).
