Obituary

Lydia Schmid

It is with both sadness and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Lydia Schmid (née Gertz) on November 4, 2025, at Gateway Haven in Wiarton, Ontario, at the age of 97.

Born on April 25, 1928, in Orłowo, Poland, Lydia was the daughter of Adolf and Leokadya Gertz (née Buchholz) and sister to Arnold and Helmut, both predeceased. Her early years were shaped by the hardship and upheaval of World War II. As a young girl, she and her family fled their farm home in Poland during the Russian invasion, finding refuge in Germany before eventually immigrating to Canada in 1961.

Shortly after her arrival in Toronto, Lydia married Artur Schmid on April 15, 1961. Together they built a life marked by faith, hard work, and hospitality. Their home at 12 Lantos Court was a warm gathering place for family and friends for many decades. Lydia and Artur faithfully attended Kristus Kirche (later Warden Full Gospel Assembly), where their faith and friendships were central to their lives.

Lydia will be lovingly remembered by her children Herb (Beverley) Schmid of Port Elgin, and Ruth (Allen) Griffiths of Salmon Arm, BC; her grandchildren Matthew (Yvonne) Schmid, Christine (Scott) Davis, Leanna (Paul) Harper, Benjamin Schmid (fiancée Marissa), and Alyssa Brown; and her great-grandchildren Ezekiel Schmid, and Audrey and Abigayle Harper.

Lydia had a nurturing and compassionate nature and expressed her love through acts of service—especially through her cooking and baking. She found joy in tending her gardens and took pride in the beauty of her flowers, especially her roses. Known for her hospitality, she had an open door and an open heart, always ready to make room for one more at the table.

Those who knew Lydia will remember her for her steadfast faith, loyalty, and tireless commitment to her family and community. Her hands were rarely still, whether crocheting, gardening, or preparing food to share with others.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Gateway Haven for their compassionate care and kindness.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of Lydia Schmid will be held at Eagleson Funeral Home, Southampton, on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Matthew Schmid officiating.
