Obituary

Knechtel, Ruth (née Barclay), passed away at the Southampton Hospital on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at the age of 88. Beloved wife to Art Knechtel. Loving mother to Paul (Lynne) and Peter (Sue). Proud grandmother to Philip (Julie), Elyse (Aaron), Cory (Roselyn) and Carla (Dennis); and great grandmother to Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Sadie, Tommy, Jacob, and Sarah.

Survived by her siblings, Shirley, Faye, Don, Marilyn, Jerry (Marie), Joan, Jon (Helen), Nancy, Sherril, Gary (Anna), and by many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents Frank and Freda Barclay.

Ruth and Art were married in Southampton on June 27, 1959, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where they went on to raise their family and build a lifetime of memories together in Southampton.

Ruth was a very proud and devoted member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for decades. Music was always an important part of her life. From singing with her sister Shirley when they were young to sharing her love of music with her church family, it brought her great joy.

Ruth had many passions. She loved farm animals, especially cows, and thoroughly enjoyed watching horse racing and baseball. She was also a wonderful baker and became a true legend at family picnics, where her baking was always something everyone looked forward to.

Ruth will be remembered for her love of family, music, community, and the simple joys that made life special. Her warmth, talents, and wonderful memories will live on in all who knew and loved her.

There will be a private family service for Ruth at the Eagleson Funeral Home, Southampton. Interment will take place at the Southampton Cemetery.
