Don Mewhinney
October 2, 1942 – April 8, 2023 - Age 80

Obituary

“If Love could keep us alive, some people would live forever”.

Don Mewhinney passed away peacefully at the Southampton Hospital on Saturday April 8, 2023, at the age of 80.  Beloved husband and best friend to Linda Mewhinney (nee Harron) for 60 years.  Amazing Dad to his three girls Cathy, Janice and Heather (Marcus Mielke).

Proud Papa of Trevor (Kayla), Mitchell, Mackenzie (Matt), Kendall (Kevin), Hannah, Nathan and Ryan, Great-Papa to Jay, Ben and Mya and Paw-paw to his beloved dogs Wagner, Oliver and Mickey.

Survived by his siblings Carol Seaman, Lorne (Nita) Mewhinney, Marlene (Bob) Masterson. Brother-in-law to Kim Mewhinney, Lillian Harron, Yvonne Harron and Gwen Harron.  Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents, Robert H and Elvira, brother Bob and his son Billy Mewhinney and his brother-in-law’s Ernie Seaman, Doug Harron, Gary Harron and Wayne Harron.

Don was loved by many friends and the family would specifically like to thank Dave Carson and Frank Renaud for their support and friendship the last few years.

Don was a proud member of the International Operators Union Local 793.  How many people can say they spent over 50 years doing work they loved.  Don took great pride in operating cranes at sites big and small across Ontario.

Avid campers, Don and Linda took many trips with their girls and in later years just the two of them following ‘Yesterday’s Wine’ and enjoying many music festivals throughout Southern Ontario.

Don loved making connections with people.  Meeting new people or running into old friends, Don could draw anyone into conversation, making connections and finding commonalities and making you feel like you had known him forever.  He was a great listener and an even better talker.

Proud Dad and Papa, Don enjoyed spending time with his family.  Family bonfires, Papa’s stories, teasing and of course his infectious belly laugh are memories that will live on in all who loved him.

How lucky are we to have had someone who is so incredibly hard to say Goodbye to?

A Gathering to Celebrate the Life of Don Mewhinney will be held at the Southampton Legion on Saturday April 22 from 1 to 5pm with words of Remembrance shared at 2 pm.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Sick Kids Hospital Foundation or Southampton Legion Branch 155.
