Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Doug Race.

Beloved husband of Mary Gale Race (née Hawman). Proud father of Scott (Victoria Starkey) Race and Carrie (Bert James) Race. Loving grandfather of Nathaniel Starkey-Race and Chelsea Starkey, and great grandfather Octavia.

Survived by his brother Gerald (Judy) Race, niece Dana (Trevor), nephew Darryl (Sarah), great niece Sophie, great nephew Kylan, and by his sister-in-law Ellen Hawman.

Doug grew up in Rainy River, Ontario where he spent a lot of him time cutting wood, mowing lawns, playing street hockey and going to the shows.  Doug and Gerry spent hours going down the river in a cedar strip boat which was made in the basement of their house by their Uncle George (Haas).  They took their lawn mowers in this boat and made some money along the way.  Doug also worked as a fishing guide at The Sanctuary Resort on Lake of the Woods.  In 1959, he went to high school in Fort William (Thunder Bay).  He started as an apprentice electrician with the CNR.

After a year, Doug went to Regina as an RCMP recruit.  He spent 12 years at various posts in Alberta where he met Mary Gale in Peace River and they married in 1965.  They just celebrated their 60thwedding anniversary.

Scott and Carrie were born in Alberta.  In 1974 the family moved to Ontario and owned two different motels in the following ten years.  Doug continued with his education taking college courses in computing, accounting, financial planning and real estate.  Doug owned an independent tax preparation business until his retirement.

Doug and Mary Gale enjoyed travelling and had lots of adventures.  Doug climbed Ayers Rock and Kilimanjaro.  He enjoyed his time with family, pets and friends.  He will be sorely missed by many.

The family want to thank the staff at the Southampton Care Centre for their compassion and care.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will occur.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Grey Bruce or to the Yukon Wild Horses.
