Hugh Wishart Wright, born August 1, 1948, dedicated disciple of The Lord and proud Scotsman, died peacefully at the age of 74 on February 10, 2023, with his wife and daughter by his side.

Hugh loved football, especially when Scotland beat England or Rangers beat Celtic. He was a grounded Glaswegian and Robert Burns devotee whose sense of humour shone when sharing stories of his upbringing and travels.  In times of despair, Hugh’s outlook was an inspiration to many.  After a terminal cancer diagnosis in 1991, he remained full of grit with unwavering faith when confronted with health challenges over the past 30 years.

He is deeply loved by his most proud accomplishment and legacy, his family – his constant and selfless caregiver, wife of 48 years, Pamela (née Beard), and his children Bruce (Jennifer), Ian (Rebecca), and Helen (Jason) Harnden.  Proud Grandad to Finley and Nash of Fort Worth, Texas, Charlotte and Isla of Keswick, Virginia, and Lochlan and Hunter of the great town of Southampton.

Hugh will be missed by his beloved sister Fay Martin of Dalry, Scotland, brother-in-law Ron Beard, sister-in-law Liz Beard, both of Edinburgh, Scotland, and his nieces and nephew, Janet, Russell, Christine and Lynn.  He is preceded in death by his father Archibald, mother Charlotte, father-in-law Albert Beard, mother-in-law Helen Beard, and brother-in-law Stuart Martin.

Hugh and family are eternally grateful and indebted to his neighbourhood, the local community, Ontario Hydro/Bruce Power, and all who have supported him and his family during his illnesses.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the medical and nursing staff which supported Hugh over the years. Saugeen Memorial, Owen Sound, London and care givers along the way.

Hugh’s funeral will be held at Tolmie Presbyterian Church on Friday, February 17 at 1:00pm, with a reception to follow at The Walker House from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Saugeen Memorial Hospital, Tolmie Presbyterian Church and the Salvation Army are welcome.
