Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Dr Arthur Handscomb on Monday May 2nd, 2022, in his 88th year. We take comfort in knowing that the last face he gazed upon, and last hands he held before slipping from this life were those of his beloved wife, Dr Sheina Handscomb.

Arthur was born in Northampton England on December 10, 1934, son of Arthur Thomas George Handscomb and Florence Gwendolyn Handscomb. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Sheina Handscomb, loving  father of Arthur John, Caroline (John), Penny (Steve) and Jaimie (Tiffany), proud grandfather of Kaitlin (Toby), Paige, Sarah, John-Ross, Elspeth, Blake, Alastair and Dean, and great grandfather of Sydney, Ellie, Sampson, and Kylar.

Arthur will be missed by many friends, and colleagues, most especially Dr John Thomson (Helen) who he met in medical school and who has remained a close and constant friend for over 60 years. No one could make Arthur laugh the way John Thomson did.

Arthur and Sheina’s medical careers took them from Scotland to Kenya to Canada where they eventually settled to raise their family in Windsor. In July of 2018 Arthur and Sheina moved to Saugeen Shores where they were embraced by the worshipping communities of St John’s and St Paul’s.

Arthur was such a special person to many. He was a kind and generous soul who fought for the rights of many, especially women with a quiet but determined strength. Beyond being an incredible doctor who cared deeply about his patients and loved his work and all the amazing colleagues and incredible nursing staff he had an opportunity to work with, he had many other talents as well.  He had a passion for history, was an avid gardener, an at-home gourmet chef and brilliant host! Arthur kept his fingers nimble by creating beautiful tapestries, and he had a brilliant sense of humour. His quips and favourite sayings continue to delight family and friends.

We would like to thank Dr Mike Marriott, Dr Bock and the amazing staff at Elgin Lodge for their incredible care of Arthur these past four years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Southampton Ontario at 1pm on Saturday June 25, 2022.
