Obituary
Douglas “Doug” Ferris
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas “Doug” Ferris, beloved partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at Southampton Care Centre.
Doug was born on August 3, 1932, in St. Williams, Ontario, to Basil Earl Ferris and Florence Bessie Amelia Dedrick Ferris.
Doug was predeceased by his beloved partner, Betty Duddle (2022); his sisters, Beth Priest, Julia Takacs (Gus), and Betty Shier; and his brother, Bill Ferris (Ellen).
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Barbara (Rob), Kimberly (Saleem), and Laura (David); his brother, Gary Ferris (Diana); and his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Doug spent many years working for Preston Metal and Roofing/Bailey Metal Products, where he was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and dedication. A genuinely friendly and outgoing man, he never missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation or make a new acquaintance. His warmth, humour, and easygoing nature earned him many friendships throughout his life.
Doug lived in Ayr, Ontario, for many years before settling in Southampton, where he met Betty. In Ayr, he was an active member of the community, volunteering his time coaching hockey and baseball and enjoying many years of playing bridge with friends.
A lifelong athlete, Doug loved sports and competition. As a young man, he played baseball at a high level and remained proud of his accomplishments on the field. He also enjoyed hockey, golf, and curling, valuing not only the competition but the friendships they brought. Later in life, he discovered a passion for sailing and found great joy on the water.
Doug will be remembered for his gift of conversation, his welcoming smile, and his remarkable ability to connect with people wherever he went.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Southampton Care Centre for their care, kindness, and compassion during Doug’s final weeks.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on July 11 at 11:00 am at the Southampton Cemetery, 445 Carlisle St., Southampton, followed by a social from 12-1:30 pm at the Southampton Legion, 13 Grosvenor St. N., Southampton, to remember and celebrate Doug.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Southampton Care Centre, Diabetes Canada, or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
